Course Description

This Block Printing Day Course provides a creative and relaxed approach to pattern. Firstly, we will look at examples of Indian block printed fabrics from my own personal collection and explore artists and designers who have helped to influence my own practice and technique.

You will be guided by Louisa through each stage of the block printing process. Firstly, you will create your own block design and which you will then carve to make your own block to print with onto your fabric.

Using your hand carved block, you will explore and develop your own pattern repeat, during this time you will have a chance to twist and turn the block to play with your repeat. Finally, you will print your chosen block pattern onto a length of Linen fabric.

You will come away from this day of Block Printing with a selection of sample pattern ways and a piece of your very own hand block printed natural linen fabric.

Louisa Loakes

Artist/Block Printer

Louisa Loakes (b.1980) is a Textile Artist based in South London, her practice is focused on the craft of Block Printing. Louisa approaches her hand printed textiles like that of an abstract painting – creating delicate, linear patterns that repeat across the materials surface. These patterns are distinctive in their simple use of geometric form, monochromatic palette and signature dash of hand-painted colour. Louisa’s hand-carved patterns are charged with a human touch, the irregularities that appear in the printing process give each piece a distinct energy and identity.

Louisa has over 10 years of experience running Block Printing Workshops and has hosted workshops for a number of Galleries, London Universities and companies throughout the UK.
