Workshop at Daylesford Organic Farm, Kingsley.

Louisa Loakes September 1, 2017

These are some photos from a recent workshop at Daylesford Organic Farm in the Cotswolds. I will be running other workshops on....

Sunday 12th November 2017 - Daylesford Organic Farm, Kingsley

Wednesday 29th October 2017 - Daylesford Organic, Notting Hill, London.

This workshop gives you a chance to play with pattern and learn the essential techniques for block printing onto fabric, guided by the talented Louisa Loakes.

You will create your own design using simple line forms and shapes. Once this is perfected, you will learn how to cut a linoleum block to transfer your design onto natural linen fabric and create an eye-catching pattern.

At the end of the session, you will have made your very own hand-printed linen cushion cover to take home.

All course materials will be provided and light refreshments will be available throughout the day. Lunch is not provided, but you may bring your own or visit the Daylesford farmshop.

THE NEW CRAFTSMEN

Block-printing with Louisa Loakes

Join textile artist Louisa Loakes for a block-printing workshop. Choosing from a selection of blocks, participants will use charcoal to experiment with mark making – rubbing and cutting onto paper to find their very own unique abstract composition before cutting onto their own block. During the workshop enjoy experimenting with the carved block, twisting and turning until you reach a design you are happy with. In this workshop participants will learn how to cut a linoleum block, transfer it onto natural linen and to create a simple pattern repeat for your own printed linen cushion cover.

Date: 8th June 2017

Venue:  34 North Row Mayfair, London W1K 6DG

Time:     2pm – 4pm

Cost: £50 + booking fee

Louisa Loakes February 19, 2017

Here are a few photos from a Workshop I ran at Makers House - which housed the New Burberry Collection taking inspiration from the artist Henry Moore. The exhibition included some of Henry Moore's most famous sculptures alongside his working models and maquettes, these were entangled with the new Burberry Collection. BurberryMakersHouse

Louisa Loakes

Louisa’s work blends elements from her fine art practice and her intuitive approach to textiles. During her time studying at Wimbledon School of Art, Louisa developed a particular interest in abstract painting, which continues to ground and guide her work across a range of mediums.

Working from her studio in Peckham, Louisa’s practice is focused on the beautifully simple, slow art of hand-carved block printing. Having spent many years researching the craft, she draws particular inspiration from the processes involved in traditional Indian block printing, and her practice interweaves Eastern folk art traditions with forms and patterns familiar to western languages of abstraction. As a self-taught block printer, she approaches fabric like a painting - or one of her charcoal drawings - creating delicate, twisting patterns that repeat themselves across its surface. Distinctive in their simple use of geometric form, monochromatic palette and signature dash of hand-painted colour, Louisa’s hand-carved block printed patterns are charged with a human touch, the irregularities that appear in the printing process giving each piece a distinct energy and identity.

Louisa Loakes Block Printing Workshops are available through her website along with her hand block printed fabric per metre, hand block printed cushions and more recently her etchings.
